Learn To Carve |

|
Making sculpture, especially stone carving with hand
tools, is a very stimulating and fulfilling activity, physically and
emotionally. There is something really exciting about releasing a
form from within a matrix of stone. It is not so much a process of imposing one’s will on an inert material, but more
of a communion, a dialogue with a living substance. It is difficult to explain, but once experienced, it
can change the way you perceive all creative processes. It can change you.
If you are interested in learning more about sculpture, how to make it, or how to look at it, I am available to help you. I have instructed beginning stone carvers at the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association annual symposia at Camp Brotherhood and Chinook. I can teach stone carving to individuals or small groups at my studio. Whether you want to learn beginning skills with hand tools, or how to tackle hard rocks with electric and pneumatic tools, we can arrange a program to suit you. |
Basically, I will demonstrate the primary functions of each instrument, introduce you to the different stones that they will cut, and help you get started. Then you can proceed on your own, or I can assist you with design, advanced techniques, history and traditions in sculpture, as much or as little as you wish. I don’t have a large inventory of stone or tools to sell at the moment, but I can connect you with reliable suppliers of both. Then there is the subject of sculpture appreciation. Painting and other two dimensional art forms are much more regularly taught in schools, and they are also more thoroughly understood among galleries and collectors. Many people in today’s art world may not have as complete a comprehension of the richness of the sculptural traditions we have inherited, nor the variety of new sculpture being created these days. There is good information available out there, and I can help you find out more if you want. To set up lessons or consultation, please call, write or email me at your convenience.
